Coolant system(s), am I right or wrong here?

Fri Sep 14, 2012 1:47 pm

Have to get this thing clear.....

Beneath the hood of our cars there are 2 coolant tank caps and a coolant reservoir. My conclusion is that the passenger side coolant tank cap is for the 1.8 litre heating system for the interior. The driver side coolant tank cap and coolant reservoir is for the 6.6 litre battery cooling system. Am I right our wrong here? And if this is the case, how come that some of you get 6 or even 7 tempbars while driving? Shouldn´t the air cool the battery cooling system enough even if it´s +100 F outside?

And another perhaps stupid question : These cars don´t have a steering column, do they? It´s just sensors and electric motors, just like the Prius? Or just as airplanes have been for 50 years or so...

There is no battery cooling system. The pumps you hear run during charging cool the charger, not the battery.

So you are telling me that they have a 6.6 litre cooling system to cool of the 3.3 Kw onboard charger?

The steering is connected to the ...... steer-bone. There's an electric power-steering but if that fails you can still steer the vehicle although it will take a lot more effort.

No truly "steer-by-wire" systems on the road just yet.

I noticed you're still working with polymers.

I don't know the capacity, but both the charger and inverter are liquid cooled - not the battery.

That doesn't sound excessive. There's two rather long runs of plumbing from the front of the car to behind the rear seats.

Actually, the charger, inverter, and motor are cooled by that system.

Well, there goes two of my (obviously) misconceptions of the car out the window!

No water cooling around the batteries and no "fly-by-wire" steering!

Boy, do I feel stupid now or what.....

A poor consolation to my stupidity is that i probably won´t need a battery cooling system anyway. This morning the temp here below 0 C/32 F. Winter is coming!

Agree that you might not need battery cooling, but I'll bet you are going to wish you had some battery heating. ;)

Well, it it sort of "around" the batteries, in that the lines run close to between the front and rear of the car. But not close enough to be helpful.
