    LEAF Stolen!!!

I assume you gave the insurance company the same information? They at least have a financial interest in a quick recovery and may well push the police to move on it...

Free EVs for the poor! Seriously!

My point of view here is that if there is a "gas guzzling clunker" to remove, it doesn't matter what the income of the owner/driver is. If the policy is to pay someone to get it off the road and into an EV, it should be available to any/all. IF we (the citizens of a given area who make up the...

ChargePoint -- is charging for time typical?

Keep in mind that when planning, they have to assume all circuits are in full use at the same time. So you can at least double the number of plugs for L1 as you can with L2 (likely even more than that) for the same total peak load capacity. Thus you end up allowing more cars to be plugged in...

    Silly idea?

Agreed. Also consider if you do a direct to vehicle without grid or battery then your payback on the panels is likely to be even longer; effectively increasing the cost/kWh actually delivered to the car. I don't know your parking habits, but do you think the car will be in that carport more...

ChargePoint -- is charging for time typical?

More likely the leaders don't need to charge at work as they are driving longer range EVs (i.e. the Teslas I've seen at my office parking lot). So they don't need to charge at the office. The charging station at my workplace is clearly there for 'other' reasons IMO. I'm sure it is not a...

Free EVs for the poor! Seriously!

Well, on the bright side it should help support the used car prices a bit eh? Those selling their used cars are unlikely to go below the available rebates eh? Artificial (government) intervention in markets typically has many unanticipated consequences... Someone will benefit, others may not...

ChargePoint -- is charging for time typical?

Yup could happen some days. Never know which ones.. you know how some days you are working along and busy enough that you lose track of time? Yeah, that seems to happen anytime I do plug in in the morning, ha! I look up and suddenly it is 6pm.... Working with a team spread across 4 time...

ChargePoint -- is charging for time typical?

My company charges $1/hr plugged in (power flowing or not). I have spoken with the facilities person who told me that was to encourage folks to move out of the spot. They are looking at changing to a steep increase (like to $6/hr or more) after the 4 hour stated limit is exhausted as a way of...

Business model of the NOT "free...forever" Tesla DC network

Frankly I don't think that Tesla owners should have to rationalize/justify anything WRT the supercharger network. While I don't know what legally binding commitments were made during sales of the Model S, it certainly was marketed as "free supercharger use for life". Nowhere in their marketing...

Free EVs for the poor! Seriously!

Hard to be certain - there are bound to be some folks on the fence there somewhere that are pushed over by the savings. Even at $80K, that is almost a 10% savings so it will affect some folks. I'm very close to that line frankly - but still below it for now so no Telsa in my immediate future...

Free EVs for the poor! Seriously!

Well, "need" is not really the issue is it? IF the objective is to get more EVs on the road then perhaps it wasn't a factor for Steve, but it did get his Tesla on the road (i.e. without the incentive Tesla may not be able to sell enough cars to make it a viable company). IF the objective of...

    Silly idea?

Agreed. The thing I wonder about is if that company would consider building a grid-tied version (skip the batteries) that could perhaps be deployed to condos/apts/homes as a real turn-key solution. I wonder what the price point on that would be and how it would compare to other options...
  13. S

    Silly idea?

Indeed I think that was the system I dug into a few weeks ago. My conclusion is that it has value for companies wanting to make a very visible (and expensive) statement OR perhaps for an off-grid solution. However, I doubt that we'll see these popping up in state parks and forests to allow EV...

Free EVs for the poor! Seriously!

I agree - incentives should not be tied to income, that's one reason I object to the current federal $7500 rebate - it should be available to all equally. However, the real question in my mind on this issue is why provide an incentive for used EVs? Assuming that an incentive was already...

    Silly idea?

Not silly at all - a carport (if located in good location) could well provide a convenient surface to install solar panels. IMO the best approach would be to build it grid-tied. If you go standalone you either only use power when car is there to charge (wasting potential energy collection) or...

Commercial EVSEs: Is there a reliability/viability problem?

Exactly - so with all those costs, you can NEVER provide the power to BEVs anywhere near what someone can get at home. Thus, unless one MUST charge away from home there will be a strong financial (and hassle) incentive to only charge at home. That leaves the long-distance travelers (those...

Commercial EVSEs: Is there a reliability/viability problem?

I disagree with this. Road taxes certainly need to be collected and BEV's should carry part of that burden - but that same tax will apply to ICE vehicles in some way. I don't see BEV's being taxed at an effective rate that exceeds the ICE rates (in terms of $/mile or whatever measure one...

Commercial EVSEs: Is there a reliability/viability problem?

I believe this is the key point to the issue. #1 installation due to a grant - i.e. someone (government or utility company) is paying to have the unit installed; the actual location and installer really don't care if anyone uses it, they get their grant money either way. #2 these "grants" do...

$450 bill from NRG / eVgo

I'm with you - while I would not mind having the flexibility to use those spots (if they prove to be reliable), the discussion here will keep me from signing up. I simply don't have time to argue with a company about such things. At this time, I don't have a need to go to those locations (at...

$450 bill from NRG / eVgo

Agreed - this should be a relatively simple thing to do. Glad I don't have to deal with that company, I'd drop them very quickly for any other alternative. But if you don't have alternatives....
