Hi,

I'm new and I just took delivery on my 2013 LEAF S with the 6.6kW charger over the weekend. Happy and excited!
BUT before I got the car, I was looking at different chargers to install at my house was a $600 EVlink 30 Amp Level 2 charger from home depot:
http://reviews.homedepot.com/1999/202963679/evlink-30-amp-level-2-indoor-electric-vehicle-charging-station-1st-generation-traditional-model-reviews/reviews.htm?sort=submissionTime" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just saw it last week on their website for $599. I want it mainly for the price and the fact that I could fully utilize my 6.6kW charger option. BUT this week it's GONE and no longer listed on home depot website. Did they get rid of it sell more expensive models? Are there any other 6.6kW - 7.2kW options available in that price range? I'm very disappointed right now as I feel like I missed out by one week. Thanks for your input!

Check http://www.evseupgrade.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I had my cord upgraded and it is my only evse. I paid $312 for the upgrade. You'll need an electrician to intall a new plug and breaker.

almost 5kW

The best way to fully utilize your 6.6kW charger is to charge away from home. I don't mean you should avoid charging at home, but if and when you ever do need to charge some place else, that is when the faster charger really shines. If you are out of juice and 25 miles from home, it's a lot less irksome to sit at a charging station for one hour than for the two hours it would take if you had the slower charger. [All times approximate. YMMV.]

At home, a 16 amp EVSE is all most people really need. It lets you charge from empty to full overnight. Yes, there are exceptions. If you make sales calls in multiple cities but come home for lunch you might need as much boost as you can get in an hour. If you are on a Time Of Use electric rate schedule and they only give you three or four hours at night on the cheapest rate you want to do all your charging during that time. But for most people, a 16A EVSE will charge their car every night while they sleep. If you are among "most" of us, consider what mhigley said. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of us here that use the EVSEupgrade every day, and complaints are extremely rare.

Checked out their webstie and it doesn't look like this upgrade can handle 30A at 240V

Thanks for the tip to check on the colder side ;)

Ray, thanks for your post, I have considered that and decided to go with 30A for a just in case scenario when I could appreciate charging time cut in half, which I'm sure I will have a need for more than once or twice over the course of owning the vehicle. + at over $300 it's pushing it up there and I'd rather spend $500 and have a permanently wired 6.6kw capable EVSE in my garage AND keep my original trickle charger as I'm leasing the car.

Understood. But I don't think you will find a reliable 30A EVSE in the $500 range. And let me assure you that an unreliable 30A is worse than a reliable 16A. Others on the board here can give you much better advice than I on specific choices, but I'm guessing you'll end up paying close to $1000.

First, the power draw from your 6.0 /6.6kW car is only 27.5 amps, so obviously any charging station with a 30 amp pilot signal or higher would work. But, some of the other suggestions above wont be that much slower:

1- Clipper Creek LCS-25 (20 amp, currently $599)
2- EVSEupgrade.com modification for your current portable can also go to 20 amps for about $350.
3- There is a guy on eBay selling "real" Clipper Creek CS-60 (48 amp pilot, needs 60 amp breaker) for about $600-ish. Very robust unit built by the stalwart of the industry.
4- If you're handy, you can build an OpenEVSE for about $500 for any pilot signal you want.

Couldn't find this. Do you have more info? Should I assume "real" means you don't believe that they are genuine units at this price?

I bought one of the Ebay CS-40s. They are from the mini-E trial and have been upgraded with a J1772 plug that fits current EVs. The seller delivered on time and it was in the new condition as described. Can't complain about a robust indoor/outdoor 32A Clipper Creek EVSE for $600.

I got the Schneider back in November (that exact model) and it's great, but no longer on the US website and backordered everywhere else. I can no longer even find it on the Schneider home site. For some reason their line of lower cost charging stations isn't available right now.

However, if I were to do it again I'd go with the EVSE upgrade - and for 2013 get the 6.6 kWh option. The upgrade gives you much more flexibility. You still have to have a 240V circuit installed where you park to use it, but then you can take it with you everywhere and add other plugs. One user here recently posted an example of charging a LEAF at an RV camping site.

Ah, I see. Found them. Thanks for the info.

If you are handy, you could build the 30 amp version
of the OpenEVSE Plus for under $499.98, getting a
very flexible and compact unit, with the ability to set
the current rating to suit the charging location.

It can be hard-wired, but most build it with a plug on
a short "pigtail", and build some adapters for the sockets
generally found "in the wild", and have portable
capability, even if they usually use it at home.

Downside is that it is not UL Listed.
Hwever, I am building one, and we have
written some DIY instructions.

One member built one for the education, and intended
to sell it for basically the shipping and parts cost.
If interested, please PM member 91040 for details.

I just mean that it is real, and not a Chinese clone.

I just came across this website. Same as Home Depot EVSE for half! the price... Sounds very suspicious. Do you guys think this is some sort of scam?
