You have to put the cup aside and let the heatsink get proper air flow.

Is there any risk or downside to leaving the cup off? Doesn't the cup form some type of important moisture or dust seal, or is it just there for cable management and to protect the wiring harness?

I have not had any issues. The cups are probably there to keep things out, and protect the back of the bulbs.

But LED's need to be kept cool, and little high speed fans are noisy and to have to depend on them to keep the LED operational is not good design, I think. The weight of the heatsink and fan is a strain on the mount, and they don't fit inside the cup, either, in all likelihood. And they certainly can't keep the LED cool inside the closed housing.

So, all LED bulbs installed in the Leaf S need the cups to be left open.
