Thanks, Nissan, for managing the Leaf rollout the way you are. I was afraid in the beginning that all the dealers would be at this pricing level. So I'm very glad that we have dealers available such as those on this forum that are willing to work with us...

I can't imagine that anyone would buy their Leaf at this high price, but who knows, maybe there will be some Hollywood types that will jump right on board...

I like "Hollywood Types", they are so lovably dumb. The last two bargain used cars I bought were from rich people who'd decided their vehicles had very little residual value after 5 years. :D My one Focus....that sucker was fully loaded and had only 27k on the clock. It was only used by a producer's flunky to run local errands! There was some paperwork in the car indicating his previous errand vehicle was a '98 Escort with similar mileage that he'd traded for the Focus in '03.

I wonder whether any of the "Hollywood types" will get a Leaf early on. I can't imagine them waiting patiently for the "reserve now" mails on Apr-20 and reserving within minutes. I'm fairly sure the Apr-20 reservation holders are all enthusiasts ...

Dealers have employees reserve a leaf and then they cancel the day it arrives and sell to someone for $5k over that has no reservation. Hollywood inventory.

Possible - but for a dealer to expect $5K extra is stupid - that shows the dealers haven't even been following the stories about leaf on the web or they are looking for suckers.

These dealer-orphans could easily sell for $5000 over MSRP to somebody where the extra money is insignificant, and waiting in line for 6 or 12 months is not acceptable.

My closest dealer will probably have 3 or 4 "orphans" available. Put up a big deposit now, and you could even choose the color. I suspect they would all be SL+QC and "full" options.

If a dealer is expecting 3 orphans, they could be "sold out" already.

Or, some dealers might have figured a way to "create" orphans, by jacking up the out-the-door price by adding a last-minute $3999 "prep" fee that you would refuse to pay.

So, CAUTION to all of us!

Anyone trying that will have to deal with the AG of the state, reporters and possibly Mark Perry giving a special call ;-)

Everyone, preserve your emails, screen shots etc.

Charging an extra five to a walkup customer is just basic economics. Low supply and high demand dictates a high price.
Nothing "stupid" about it. If you want mine I would charge far more than 5k ;)

If dealers can find customers willing to pay a premium they would be fools not to take their money. That's how markets work, at least it used to be before the central planners got control and destroyed the economy.
