2011 Leaf unable to charge at public stations

I got my daily update call last night and not surprisingly the car tested out of spec. They don't expect a replacement part until Saturday and the car to be ready earlier than Monday. We will see if the third time's the charm.

2011 Leaf unable to charge at public stations

Update so far. So after making me pick the car up to test on friday, dealership had no idea I was coming and car only had 4 bars, got home with 5 miles on the dash and no bars. Sucks not being able to recharge at any of the 6 or so stations on the way home. Car went back in on monday...

2011 Leaf unable to charge at public stations

I have tried to reinsert the plug up to three times with no change. I'm going to be escalating the issue to both the dealership manager and with whoever the manager is at nissan corporate tomorrow. I'll be dropping the car back of in the morning and will report what happens.

2011 Leaf unable to charge at public stations

I've never really figured out if the diode and resistors are in the receptacle or the charger. The nissan people keep saying its in the receptacle. Yep, I'm aware of the problem however it seems the leaf tech at the dealer and the tech line guys are not aware of it and would rather try to get...

2011 Leaf unable to charge at public stations

So after 2 years of driving my leaf the dreaded unable to charge fault struck. I am only able to charge with an AV unit or the included panasonic L1. The car shows no error and the coulomb stations report plug removed. So far I have tried 7 public stations all CT2000's, my DOE supplied...

LEAFSCAN™ - The Ultimate Instrument for your LEAF!

Phil count me in on the condition it can be updated to work with CAN messages of other EVs in the future. I plan to get a second EV and it will probably be from another manufacturer. Knowing you I'm sure it will.

What home charging station are you using?

I have used the SPX Power Xpress unit the last year. The Coulomb unit was just installed, but no issues so far.

here is the SPX alongside the Coloumb unit.

    SAE J1772 "Combo Connector"

I can think of a downside to using the existing L1 and L2/neutral pins to also do DC L1, you would need a pretty beefy DPDT relay (50A minimum on the leaf?) in the EV to alternate between the on-board charger and the battery bus. That could replace DC contractor but doing so might pose a safety...

    Tesla Supercharger Network

Had not thought about it also giving them more choices in siting. Maybe they will go with another silicone valley "Greener" tech to supplement solar, the bloom box. I haven't heard anything out of them in months. http://www.bloomenergy.com

If not then they aren't going to be making any friends at the utilities! Edit: I'm sure whatever it is will involve a wheel of cheese or a unladen African Swallow.

    Tesla Supercharger Network

Solar is my guess also but who knows, I had forgotten SolarCity was an Elon enterprise. His comments at the shareholders meeting certainly seem to indicate solar, crystals lighting up? Great Idea on the retired packs for storage, I had not thought of that.. Not going to be a huge supply of...

    Tesla Supercharger Network

I am going to guess banks of capacitors possibly in combination with on-site generation.

ChargePoint America Free Home Charging Station

After going back and forth between CPA and Verdek I got mine installed for 370. I had my own electrician pre-run the wire and reuse my existing breaker. I was able to get mine connected via a 14-50 by being very nice to the local contractor and having the cord already.

    SAE J1772 "Combo Connector"

The Type 2 core is a better design IMHO. I think it is based on the Mennekes connector.

Speaking of CAN over the PLC. CAN bridge mode. http://www.arianecontrols.com/documents/AC_CPM1_Product_Brief.pdf TI is making a PLC modem also. http://www.cygnuscorp.com/autorem%20paper%20r4.pdf

Excellent information. Is this the presentation? http://ewh.ieee.org/r4/chicago/foxvalley/Harper_EV_Standards__Communication_Apr18_2012.pdf Thanks to that one I found these...

    SAE J1772 "Combo Connector"

I'll paraphrase by saying OFDM has very robust error correction and noise rejection. Same encoding used in WiFi, DSL, and Bluetooth. You can only imagine how crowded and noisy the 2.4Ghz spectrum is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthogonal_frequency-division_multiplexing Also I'm not sure if...

    SAE J1772 "Combo Connector"

Thanks Scott I completely missed that post in the other thread. 200A sounds a lot more reasonable. Was I correct on the SAE voltage being up to 480Vdc? Thanks for biting, I would be bored without stimulating conversation. Having not worked on automotive circuits I find it hard to believe...

    SAE J1772 "Combo Connector"

So my initial thoughts: Pros. Single connector is good. I think using BoPL is probably a better idea than CANbus, it's much more tolerant of power line type noise that will be in the cable and should be very resilient. Cons. I worry about the latch being on the top of such a long connector...
