He meant that if you treat the battery in a way that encourages degradation, you may well "win" a new battery under warranty. More likely now, Nissan would, if you qualify for a new battery, buy the car back, instead. What encourages degradation? Frequent fast charges (when the battery is hot, if possible) to 100%, and leaving the car at 100% for long periods.
