Cambodia to allow cruise ship shunned over virus fears to dock
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-thailand-cruiseship/cambodia-to-allow-cruise-ship-shunned-over-virus-fears-to-dock-idUSKBN2060SB
For nearly two weeks, the MS Westerdam, a ship of healthy passengers, had been sailing throughout Asia after being turned away by Japan, Taiwan, Guam and the Philippines over fears that someone on the cruise could have the new flu-like virus that has killed more than 1,100 people, almost all of them in China.
...
The latest country to shun the ship, which has 1,455 passengers and 802 crew on board, had been Thailand, where the health minister refused to grant the Westerdam permission to dock.

Apple Says March Quarter Revenue Will Fall Short Due to Coronavirus Impact [Updated]

For anyone curious, there are numerous folks who were on the cruise ship in Japan and flown out via chartered jet posting on social media about their experiences. Via a news story, I found one of them:

Why the death rate is still mostly unknowable.

At present, it is tempting to estimate the case fatality rate by dividing the number of known deaths by the number of confirmed cases. The resulting number, however, does not represent the true case fatality rate and might be off by orders of magnitude.

There has been a sharp jump in new cases of novel coronavirus in South Korea since Thursday, the country's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today.

A total of 52 new cases were diagnosed in just one day, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 156.

Among the new cases, 39 are linked to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in the southern city of Daegu. South Korean authorities said Thursday they were looking to test the entire congregation.

https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3051792/coronavirus-chinas-car-sales-collapse-officials-warn-sharp

A 92 per cent drop in car sales in China in the first half of February provided the first real indicator of the economic impact of the coronavirus epidemic, with officials also warning of a sharp decline in Chinese exports and imports for the first two months of the year.

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Friday said that sales dropped to just 4,909 units in the first 16 days of the month, down from 59,930 vehicles in the same period a year earlier.

Besides the massive spike in cases in South Korea (most linked to a religious sect in Daegu) + occurrences in places like Iran and Italy, https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-23-20-hnk-intl/index.html mentions
The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has upgraded its travel advisory for Japan to level 2 due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
...
It advised travelers in Japan to "exercise enhanced cautions" in line with a level 2 alert, upgraded from a level 1 "watch" status.

The CDC has also issued a level 2 alert for South Korea, and a level 3 guidance for mainland China, which advises against "all non-essential travel." That latter alert does not cover Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan.

https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-24-20-hnk-intl/index.html now says "South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced 231 new cases today, bringing the country’s total to 833 in a massive jump."

“Ultimately, we expect we will see coronavirus spread in this country,” said CDC Director Nancy Messonnier. “It’s not so much a question of if, but a question of when.”

Under the category of "I'm not as smart" let me list two key uncertainties:

1) Can China contain this virus? Unclear, but unlikely at what is known today.

If China is willing to continue to lock down millions of people for months more, and use the power of their surveillance state to track down all contacts of anyone found to be infected and quarantine them all, then perhaps China contain can the virus. While the numbers coming from China are slightly suspicious, cases reported outside Hubei (Wohan city) have been tailing off for a while, and inside Hubei have been doing so for the past week.

I said unlikely, and looks like I might be wrong. Still unclear, but now looks possible if China is willing to pay the price.

2) Even if China does, the virus has already spread outside China. Can the rest of the world, including places with almost non-existent health care also contain the virus? Not every government can lock millions of citizens in their houses, and let one person per household out twice a week to buy food.

Iran. Iran isn't even close to being capable of this sort of isolation, quarantine and case tracking. Not to mention basics like testing for the virus, masks and other protective gear. Same for Iraq and much of the rest of the Middle East and Africa.

The virus has not been "contained" by China. After letting it spread for two weeks, they then acted to slow the spread, with some success. The virus is now found worldwide, including in the US. The odds of the US containing the spread here are also fairly low.

A different meaning of "contained". Yes, the virus wasn't "contained within China". But China seems to have reduced the grow rate of the virus's spread below the critical value of 1. I didn't think that was likely. This means that China, if willing to maintain current measures, could eventually wipe out the virus within China. The rest of the world is a different story.

Yeah, we're doomed. The way we all die is infected coworkers who can't afford to miss a paycheck and will lie about being sick to keep working.

I had one of our guys in my office a few weeks ago, maybe a month now, and he was hacking all over the place (and not covering his mouth while doing so, by the way!). I'm like "Dude, are you sick? WTF are you doing in my office? Why aren't you taking PTO?" (our company doesn't separate sick vs. vacation time, which I've always felt is a huge mistake).

His response, "I can't afford to."

The other way we all die is people who admit to having the virus but don't do enough to keep others from getting it.

In the meantime, my dad is terminally ill back in the UK, with the end maybe a couple of months away, and I'm wrestling with the guilt over feeling like I shouldn't go back. Not so much because I'm afraid of catching the virus myself, but because I wouldn't want to infect my loved ones (there or here) or get a long quarantine upon return to the US. That's assuming they even keep the borders open. Worst case is I get both the virus and a get stuck in an another country.

The one bright spot for me, not because I'm a great oracle, but because I've been afraid as **** that the stock market has been totally overblown for the last year, is that I got all my money into cash last November, when the market last crashed out to the tune of 1000 points. I was actually starting to feel a bit foolish for doing so, particularly last week when the market was at an all time high. Now I feel a bit relieved and am actually rooting for it going down a **** load more so that, assuming I live, I can ride the next run-up. It will position me better for my anticipated retirement in about 4 years. Again, assuming I live. ;)

Yes, not separating PTO from sick time is a bad business decision. My company has unlimited sick time, but even with that not all people realize they should stay home as soon as they feel sick. One person who works a few offices down the hall from me often comes in when he's sick (fever, coughing, etc). He was in China returning the first week of February. Thankfully, he placed himself in a 2 week quarantine when he got back (and he's not been in since, as he came down with the regular flu right as the quarantine ended. I have a compromised immune system (thanks to having survived Lymphoma 20 years ago) and get sick very easily. If he come back into the office, I had planned to not come into work, working from home.

Hand hygiene remains the best thing you can do...

Thorough hand washing, staying at least 6' from people who seem to have a respiratory infection, and wearing a mask if you are infected seem to be the big ones. A flu shot is also recommended, although I'm not sure if that's to help protect against this virus or just to reduce the load on medical facilities.

This has been a bad flu season. Get the shot NOW, keep beds free. You really don't want to spend any time in a hospital with a flu with corona virus down the hall.

The annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) that was set to take place from March 16 to March 20 in San Francisco, has been postponed until "later in the summer," event organizers announced today.
I wonder if they'll move it to a hotter location. In the summer, it might be like 60ish to low 70s F in SF while it can be 90+ F in the South Bay and other hotter parts.

In Singapore where it's always hot and humid, I found https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/3052759/coronavirus-singapore-confirms-three-new-cases-bringing. I've been there once in Nov 2017. It was unpleasant outside. :(
Of Singapore’s 96 cases, 66 have fully recovered, 30 are still in hospital – with “most” stable and improving – and eight are in intensive care, according the ministry.
