Thousands of people die every day, it's a big country. A lot of those deaths aren't even related to the virus, providers just code them that way for the uninsured so they will get paid.
Yes, it seems likely you heard claims like this from the "news" outlets you follow. That's what what I've heard from another forum in a "Why do people believe COVID-19 conspiracy theories?" thread about the source of this. https://www.mediamatters.org/coronavirus-covid-19/right-wing-media-suggested-covid-19-fatalities-were-overcounted-new-data seems to confirm that.

Yet https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/01/official-us-coronavirus-death-toll-is-a-substantial-undercount-of-actual-tally-new-yale-study-finds.html
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2767980 seems to indicate the opposite, that COVID-19 death numbers are actually substantially undercounted.

Even if we discount deaths, you can't ignore hospitals and ICUs filling up.

My 51 year old cousin likely died of Covid19 in mid February.

Reported as a heart attack, "like no heart attack the ER doctor had ever seen before". But since then...

Excess deaths show that Covid19 is new mortality, beyond even what is reported as Covid19.

Norway, on the other hand, locked down and controlled Covid19. Funeral homes are asking for relief, as business is down. Fewer old people are dying from flu and such.

"When the measures against the coronavirus were imposed, it turned out that it not only broke the back of the coronavirus but other viruses too," Erik Lande, now head of the family business in the south of the country, told AFP.

"So much so that some of the old and sick people who would have died in normal circumstances are still around," he added.

Oh, and check out the picture of the Tesla hearse.

I wonder if this will get pulled down. It's been up there for days, it seems. Has some NSFW language in it.

The EU has banned us for now.

I checked the other day about Japan due to a post on another forum and we're banned too: https://www.japan.travel/en/coronavirus/. Oddly, they banned Canada even though they seem to have it relatively under control. Not sure why Taiwan and New Zealand are banned.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp sues Atlanta mayor over city's face mask mandate

Georgia's governor on Thursday sued Atlanta's mayor over that city's mask law, a day after the governor banned local governments from requiring the coverings that health experts say help to stop the spread of COVID-19.

What a moron!

Moron hardly begins to cover it. What do you call someone who commits serial manslaughter out of stupidity and ideological blindness?

Oddly, they banned Canada even though they seem to have it relatively under control.

They abut something like six of the more asshole-ish US states.

At the risk of introducing more politics, I was dumbfounded by the "approve of Trump on coronavirus outbreak" poll result at https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/64-distrust-trump-coronavirus-pandemic-approval-declines-cases/story?id=71779279. For Now (poll conducted July 12 to 15, 2020), 79% of Republicans approved! What the? I was surprised it could be higher than 20%.

Are they blind to how countries like Taiwan, New Zealand and Hong Kong have handled it? Are they blind to what's going on in AZ, TX and FL w/hospitals filling up and horrendous lines for testing now?

I suspect that many of them are just reflexively saying "No, we ARE NOT wrong!" Not all of them, though. Reason isn't something that comes easily to monkeys in everyday life, unless the acquisition of food or sex is involved. Since masks and social distancing are related to neither, it quickly becomes Turd Tossing Time...

Why shut down the economy over 200,000 deaths per year when smoking kills over 400,000 per year and the government won't even consider banning cigarettes.
I guess they just need to figure out how to tax the spread of trumpvirus.

Oh and no one calls it trumpvirus any more. I wonder why that is.

Because someone smoking cigarettes does not have a likely chance of killing my 90 yo parents. Covid does.

Why don't you take all of your Trumpvirus theories and visit your grandparents. I am sure they would love to see you.

This evening's bike ride showed me a couple of HS graduation parties - with no social distancing, no masks, and in one case, cars lined up down the street, with maybe a hundred or more people there, crammed together under an outdoor tent. Upstate NY seems to be begging for a Hot Zone of our own...

OC Board of Education votes to support return to school without social distancing, masks
https://www.ocregister.com/2020/07/13/oc-board-of-education-votes-to-support-return-to-school-without-social-distancing-masks/
While school districts across California are choosing remote learning to start the school year, the Orange County Board of Education is going a different route. On Monday night, the conservative-leaning board voted on its own guidelines for schools: a return to the old ways, before the coronavirus pandemic.

That means on-campus instruction. No face masks. No keeping 6 feet apart.

The lone dissenting vote was Trustee Beckie Gomez, also the only board member to wear a mask during the meeting.

The board has no power to direct any of Orange County’s 27 school districts to follow its guidelines, which are in direct opposition to those issued by the Orange County Department of Education, state public health officials and others.

But one woman says employees pressured her to take her mask off or leave.

“I was very rudely greeted,” said Maggie. “He asked me if I had seen the sign.”

Maggie said she’s been coming to the bistro for 10 years, but this time she left without her order.

“I was definitely not welcome to stay with my mask on,” she said.

Banning cigarettes and most tobacco products for minors has long been policy. And at least around here, you can't smoke indoors in any public place, or within a certain distance (30'?) of an entrance to same, precisely because second-hand smoke poses health risks to others.

I had to breathe my mom's second-hand smoke for the first 18 years of my life when I couldn't block it out (closed doors with towels blocking the gaps etc.), and I'm very glad that I don't have to worry about breathing anyone else's smoke now whenever I go inside a public place. Besides, relatively few people smoke around here now, thanks to half a century of medical warnings and increasingly strict regulation, so it's pretty easy to avoid those who do when outside.

Ah we can just ban trumpvirus. That will fix everything.
Relatively few people smoke cigarettes, that's why it kills 400,000 people per year.
What can I say I'm just overwhelmed with logic here.

They're all dead. I will go visit them, you lead the way and I'll be right behind you.

My sister has scheduled a memorial and burial for my father next Sunday/Monday (he passed away in March and I convinced her to postpone it). He was 97 and well known and liked by many. In other times, I could imagine a several hundreds of people showing up. I can't convince her this is still not a good idea. She's planned a 4 hour wake "but only 30 people at a time can be in the funeral home".

Based upon this data, https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu/ an event with 100 people in Nassau County has a 36% risk that a positive person will be in attendance.

My wife and I are, sadly, skipping the wake.

My condolences. I'm starting to wonder if primates have some sort of hardwired instinct to congregate together during pandemics when there are too many of us. There is no rational explanation for what is going on...

Obviously the rate remains too high and there are a lot more of us now, but are you claiming that the percentage of Americans who smoke hasn't dropped drastically over the last 50 years?

BTW, I make no claims about other areas, I'm talking about California generally and the Bay Area specifically. As you are presumably aware, smoking rates vary widely by region and demographics. I expect there's a high correlation between areas with strong resistance to wearing masks and higher rates of smoking, but have no numbers. This map seems to indicate that's likely:

Hong Kong reports highest one-day rise in COVID-19 cases
https://thehill.com/policy/international/508035-hong-kong-reports-highest-one-day-rise-in-covid-19-cases
The city’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam told reporters that 108 cases were recorded in one day, with 83 of them being local and 25 of them being imported. The new COVID-19 cases bring the total for the semi-autonomous city to 1,886, BBC News reported.

"I think the situation is really critical and there is no sign the situation is being brought under control," Lam said.
...
Hong Kong was able to combat the coronavirus after it’s believed to have originated in China late last year. But in the past two weeks, the city has counted more than 500 new cases, according to Yahoo News.
