when was the gen2 leaf first sold in usa?,can you tell by the vin number if they were blessed with a lizard battery or not?,my gen2 was built nov 2013 in japan and was sold to me as having the new lizard battery (24 kw),does anybody know for sure?some on this forum are saying 2015 and some are saying late 2013 early 2014? cheers.

Not sure what you mean by "gen 2". The current Leaf could be sorta called gen 1.5. The exterior and interior are basically unchanged since their debut in Dec 2010.

But, model year 2013 was a mid-cycle refresh. There were numerous improvements and new features, some optional.

Also, production of US market Leafs was moved to the US instead of Japan. It appears that 2013 Leafs built sometime in 4/2013 or later have better batteries in terms of degradation that all prior Leafs.

Model year 2015 marked the beginning of the lizard battery: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17168. Some assert that some late 2014 model year cars may have lizard batteries. AFAIK, Nissan has never confirmed this and nobody has confirmed that via part # or inspection.

Model year 2016 marked the beginning of the 30 kwh Leafs.

lizard battery unless it was a replacement did not exist in 2013. any Japan built LEAF 11/2013 was not built for the American market so need a lot more info from you

I would start with posting your VIN

Just a guess but from users ID I'd guess they are in NZ(New Zealand)....probably explains why even in Nov '13 they were still coming from Japan....and like cwerdna said '13 was kind of the first year the Leafs changed a bit in the US and ~ April they switched to a better life battery although not specifically the "Lizard" battery which was official for model year '15 in the US.

there is a general consensus that the lizard battery first hit the streets a few months before the 2015 MY either in replacements, late 2014 builds or both. We should know by now that Nissan doesn't wait on any calendar to make changes.

thanks all for your responses, the 2nd gen leaf here(nz used jap import) is when they went to a dark interior, square charger on top of the inverter,,removed the charger from behind the rear seat, also has a battery charge % display, light behind the charging port etc, there were about 100 improvements according to nissan,my vin is 062570.in the past on other models Nissan introduced upgrades for the domestic market some time before they appeared overseas.

Yes, that's the 2013 Leaf we have here. We consider it to be a "refresh" instead of a new generation because most of the car is still the same as the 2011-2012.

In the U.S. "Jap" is considered a derogatory and offensive slur, suggest not to use this particular abbreviation:
