Which Leafs have the Lizard battery? (import from Japan)

Hi all,

I'm looking at importing a Leaf from Japan (to Perth, Australia). I was looking at a 30kw battery version, but....

I read a post on this forum saying that the most reliable Leaf battery is from 2015 (Lizard). I'm a bit confused as to the actual year these 'Lizard' packs were in production Leafs though (and are they 24Kw or 30Kw), as his post isn't that clear on this particular point (if Warranty that would imply a later Leaf has the Lizard natively) ...so if anyone could shed some light on this please.

So I'm a bit confused as to the most reliable Leaf battery to get, and how to make sure the importer can identify it.

The "Lizard" pack is 24kwh, and is found in both 2015 and in 24kwh 2016 Leafs. (The latter are S versions from the first half of 2016 before all of the models gt the 30kwh packs.) The 40kwh packs are looking to be at least as good as the Lizard packs, apart from a somewhat higher rate of defective cells.

My budget doesn't stretch to importing a 40Kw Leaf unfortunately ($35k). 24kw are about $15k and 30Kw about $20k.

I was aiming for the 30Kw until I read about the battery degradation being worse.

So the consensus is still to avoid the 30Kw, or are there any decent 30Kw years/models?

I'm going to link my used Leaf buying guide. Pay particular attention to the section on the 30kwh Leafs. Yes, there are good 30kwh packs, especially in cooler climates, but it can be hard to identify them because of the BMS update that Nissan released. The guide will explain that.

Battery capacity is measured in kWh, not "kw".

For the US market, the (24 kWh) "lizard" packs began w/model year 2015 per https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=17168 which went on sale in the US sometime in mid-2014. Model year '14 was a short model year here. And yes, '16 original S trim was 24 kWh and almost certainly also got this "lizard" formulation.

I can't speak to other markets.
