If Gudy's car is on any of these, it seems it would be the UNITED SPIRIT which is due into LA on the 28th. I haven't been tracking the ships since before this one left port, but the report is that is sailed from Yokohama rather then Oppama/Yokosuka - but this might just be an artifact of the tracking software rather then where it actually docked. There is a fair chance Gudy's car is on this ship.

But if I would have to place a bet on it - I'd bet that Gudy's car is being loaded as I type, onto the NISSEI. The NISSEI *just* docked at the Oppama plant - at the Nissan dock, not the Yokosuka dock! I can't find much information on this ship, but the tracking software shows it at the Nissan dock, and it's picture sure looks like a car carrier. I believe it takes about 10 days to reach the US West coast from Japan, and then a few more days to pretty the car up and get all of the media assembled for delivery to Gudy. This seems like it fits his expected time schedule better then something coming off of the United Spirit.

Of course, the KINJYU MARU also just moored at Oppama, but at least according to the tracking software, not exactly at the Nissan wharf. So you might want to keep an eye on this one too.

Zoom in here to the dock to see the location: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/

(ETA - sorry -click in grid 29 and zoom into Yokosuka/Oppama)

Here is the ship: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/showallphotos.aspx?mmsi=431100139

The itinery still shows the destination as Oppama - but as soon as this gets updated, we'll see if it is indeed bring Gudy the world's first Leaf!

I thought they were coming (or already came) on the Galaxy Leader. I'm of the belief that the Leaf(s) are already here. The ship was in the bay area just over a week ago, and if it went through the Panama canal ... all would be corroborated, because now it's traveling N/W in the Gulf of Mexico after being in port for a couple days ago See here:

marinetraffic.com will let you track any cargo ship you suspect of carrying Leafs (Leaves) within a day or so.

Yup! :D

Nissei confirmed as auto carrier:

2783 8708830 NISSEI JG4687 Vehicle Carrier 3845 1988 Japan

at http://e-ships.net/index/N6.shtml

Well . . . if that IS the ship . . . it's still sitting in port, in Japan:
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?mmsi=431100139
And at THIS late date? There's no way in heck it can cross the pacific ... and clear customs during holidays, get delivered & prepped by the 11th.

According to this paper: http://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/handle/1721.1/42803/41154595.pdf?sequence=1

The nautical distance from Yokohama and Los Angeles is 4385.

If this ship does it's advertised average speed of 14 knots, it will reach LA in 12.5 days. That would get it into LA on the 6th, 7th, or 8th depending on when it leaves port. A day to off load, and a day or less to truck to SF (trucks can drive at night), and a day to prep - it could all fit into the timeline.

With most of the cars delayed until next year, I'd be guessing that this delivery would be on a tight timetable.

Of course, for Gudy Nissan may fly the Leaf to SF.

I like this post from PriusChat:

http://www.ssamarine.com/caseStudies/innovating2.html

"When you discharge over half a million autos every year, every scratch counts – especially when the cost of each repair is over $1,000. " "more than 150 longshore workers can be assigned to drive autos off the ship in a single eight hour shift. " At the beginning of every shift, each driver is required to visit the training center - whether it is to watch a video about a specific vehicle they will be handling that day, pick up a brochure with safety information or read a training message with important information specific to that vessel or customer. "

It will be an interesting day for those longshoremen when the ship does arrive.

You left out something. It'd take 5 to 7 days to clear customs. When cargo comes from over seas, you don't just unload, then off you go . . . unfortunately . . . especially in these post 911 times. Then there's dealer prep, which kills another day, easily. That's why I'm guessing they're already here.
;)
If that IS the container ship bringing Leafs (still), marinetraffic.com shows the ship just arriving. Too bad the harbor doesn't have live web feeds. Maybe I'll look into that.

Wow - the Nissei has left the Nissan dock at Oppama already. That was quick! That was only long enough to load a car or 50.

Let's watch this and see where it heads to after it's current stop further north in Tokyo Bay.

If I remember correctly the phone call from monday, I believe that Mark mentioned that the car was loaded (or being loaded) on the ship. If I didn't get it wrong, and if his info was correct, then the car was not yet in the US on Monday.

you obviously were not on the Priuschat boards in April 2009 when the first 2010 Pri's were being loaded onto the boats.

there were a half dozen posts for software that provided real time GPS tracking of the ships, you could not only guess estimated port time, but also its exact position.

most people do a clock count down timer, many at PC had a mileage countdown timer

Bummer - the Nissei is sailing the wrong direction, unless it is just making another port call before heading to Gudy's house.

Anyone have a link showing why some think this is the correct cargo ship?
