Hi all,

I cannot connect my android to my Bluetooth in the Leaf. It is hard to sum up because after many many tries, I seem to fail at different points in the process. The closest I got was when the phone gave me the MyCard screen and asked for the pin. Halfway through entering the pin it quit and gave a message like "My Car is having trouble pairing with the device." Most other times I cannot even get to that point.

If you have a suggestion please dumb it down. This is my first Leaf and my first cell phone, never mind smart phone.

Thanks!

Bluetooth can be a pain to pair with any device some times.

Do you get to the screen on your phone that says "Search for Devices"? Then does it find "My Car"? Then are you able to enter a PIN of 1234? What happens next?

Also what kind of phone are you using?

What is frustrating is that I get foiled at different points each time I try. The MyPhone android will get to the Scan for Devices step, and nothing happens when I tap this. Once I did get to the MyCar prompt for the pin, and by the time I entered the 1 and 2 it gave a message 'My Car cannot maintain pairing with the device', or something to that effect.

Sounds like there might be some interference or a weak signal (also typical of Bluetooth). You'll have to keep trying. Once it pairs it should work fine from then on.

What kind of phone do you have? Newer phones will have better Bluetooth radios, protocols, and sw.

It is a new MyPhone from Samsung, and my carrier is T Mobile. The Leaf person at my dealer said I could bring it down and she will try, so I will go tomorrow. At one point I saw the model number for the phone on one of the screens so it looks like they did find each other at some point. Like I said I never even had a cell phone before so I am stumbling around here.

the first connection to phone can be finicky. i suggest multiple tries with reboots of phone on each try.

but basic process is go to phone, turn on Bluetooth, go to settings, and go to screen where it will say "make phone discoverable" then stop.

go to car settings, find screen "search for devices" now go back to phone, set the "discoverable" option on. then go to car and search.

the reason you want to do this especially if you are unfamiliar is the discoverable portion puts your device in a vulnerable position so its only going to say in that mode a short period of time. so you want everything ready to roll so you dont time out.

your car should find the phone right away and the phone should see the car and ask for the pin the car provides. type the pin from the car into the phone and it should pair and ask if you want to connect to car.

after the first time, the phone should automatically pair with the car

Thanks Dave, I think those are the steps I have been taking. After I hit Make it Discoverable it starts a 120 or 180 second countdown. Usually at some point I tap the phone to take the next step and nothing happens. I only got to the MyCar point once. Tomorrow my Nissan dealer, who has always been great, said they would do it.

usually your phone will find "something" you tap on it and it prompts you to enter in the pin provided by the car. have you ever made it to this point?

if you have and failed to complete pairing, you want to delete all devices from your bluetooth profile, reboot and try again.

I got to Enter pin prompt once, and excitedly entered the first two digits. Then the phone gave a message something like Failed to Maintain Pairing to Device.
Okay, so now I will try to figure out how to delete the devices and try again. Thanks for taking the time to help this novice figure this out.

Make sure you have the latest Android OS installed.

Might try shutting down WiFi on the phone.

This is a bit random, but on my iPhone whenever I upgraded the OS I had to completely clear the bluetooth system by deleting all bluetooth devices, restart phone, and re-pair everything. If I did not the bluetooth connections were unstable. Perhaps you have already tried this from what DaveinOlyWA said.

This is a brand new phone, so there is nothing to upgrade. I will see if I can figure out how to delete any bluetooth devices that might be on there and start over again. The Nissan dealer said I can bring it to them and they will set it up. It is humbling not to be able to set it up myself.

If you have ICS on it this could be your issue. Samsung is still having script issues with their bluetooth. You have to keep trying but it will eventually connect. But it could, also, just be the car.

I finally took my Leaf to the dealer. The Leaf specialist was on a test drive so they sent me to service. Service said my phone model was not supported by Leaf. He didn't sound convincing so I waiting for Venessa, the Leaf specialist. She had my phone connected in 20 seconds. Glad my instinct told me not to have faith in what the service guy said.
