I've been following the Peak Oil debate for over 8 years and yeah, the doom and gloom has been slow to arrive... Back in 2003 we imagined collapse by now but with gas at near $4 (aside from the annoying reports of people at the pump complaining) life goes on. Certainly the energy situation 10-20 years from now will be dramatically different, but what about 2012? Or 2013? I have to think the one thing the Peak Oil folks have been leaving out of the equation is the economic side. As oil becomes more scarce relative to demand, prices go up. When prices go up, the economy slumps and less energy is needed so prices come back down. We'll continue to see this oscillation for a number of years even though the over all trend will be higher prices and the production will stay flat (as it's been for 5-6 years now) or slightly decline. One might argue that the economic slump brought on by the sub prime housing market fiasco has bought us a few extra years before things get nasty on the energy side... But when is the tipping point? When do we see that the downward slide has actually begun? And who wants to give up the conveniences of modern life to live on a farming commune before you actually have to? Of course by the time it becomes obvious, you wouldn't be safe on your farming commune anyway because some hungry bastard with a gun will just take your food anyway..

When you follow the links and look at all of the slides of the presentation it becomes apparent that "unidentified projects" actually represents likely production of more costly sourced fuels. Fuel is getting more expensive, which is good, but is not running out in the next few years or even decades. (I don't agree with current policy, but this slide is being misinterpreted and the facts distorted).
2013 lease ended, purchased a red 2015 SL Premium from Ray Ishak at Magic Nissan. Good deal + rebates + $7500 tax credit + no sales tax = Leaf for Sentra money.

Based on the responses I've seen so far, most of you have no clue how bad it really is. FUD indeed. This head-in-the-sand attitude probably enables you to sleep better, so I guess that's good. But those who are directly affected by the wars over oil and the escalating price of this diminishing resource don't have that privilege. C'est la vie.

Paul, we have survived and flourished after ration coupons, shortages, price hikes etc.
As if any of this would be new

Maybe "we" have, but you seem to have left out those who have starved to death, been killed in battle (civilians and soldiers) and the economic devastation we're already experiencing. A steep rise in the price of oil exacerbates all of those problems. Just because "we" are able to come through unscathed does not mean it's good for everyone.

I'm really concerned that a group such as this one doesn't see the urgency. You all seem to be content in the hope that a miracle will occur. It feels a lot like whistling past the graveyard.

There have always been starving people, even before the oil age. Sadly there will always be people that go hungry.
Likewise there has always been war throught recorded human history. Many battles far worse than what has been in recent history and not fought over oil. (Probably many over other resources)

Which one was the "war to end all wars"? WWI? As if.

With or without oil all this will continue. It is just part of the mix.

Reminds me of an old fart (a total Con) I used to work with. Loved to go off on rants about the evils of regulations etc. Seat belt laws came up one day and I mentioned it took a law to get seatbelts put in cars. He snapped "let's vote, I never wore a seat belt growing up and I turned out fine!". Smiling at him, my boss says "but those that were killed are not around now to disagree with you". We all just laughed.

Sometimes it takes a bit of awareness to see past the tip of your own nose. The article and background are sound. And if it makes you feel better Paul alot of the screen names above do not represent the majority of members on MNL. We have all just seen different drafts of this information and already absorbed it.
