Nissan warns of record loss as pandemic hits turnaround
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-niss ... SKCN24T0YT
the virus pandemic and associated plunge in demand has taken a heavy toll on the car industry, with Nissan reporting a second straight quarter of operating losses on Tuesday.

The company forecast an operating loss of 470 billion yen ($4.5 billion) for the year to March 2021, much larger than analysts’ consensus estimate for a 262.8 billion yen loss, according to Refinitiv data. That would be the second annual loss in a row.

Why the shock? Pre pandemic Carlos said they would be in bankruptcy 2022 based on insider info. I just wish they would have released the Ariya in 2017 but at the estimate price range for $40K to $55K for the 2/4 wheel drives is going to be more than a small challenge for a old player running with the temp gauge in the red at the back of the pack.

The 40k play works in the US as they will have the 7500 tax credit plus state incentives. This makes it 27,500 in New Jersey and 30k in a few other states. Thats not too far off a new compact SUV.

An article behind a paywall indicated Japanese government was encouraging a Nissan/Honda merger. Not sure why?

Thanks. I see others picked up the FT story. I was not surprised at Honda's take on the challenges facing Nissan's past mergers and Japan's concerns about their business model.

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/hond ... ger-japan/ mentions
One former Nissan executive told the Financial Times the merger simply wouldn't make sense from a structural standpoint and said there'd be little to gain from such a move for either company. The person pointed to major differences in engineering, which would make it incredibly difficult to boost economies of scale by sharing parts.
I haven't had time to think much about the first point but I agree w/the last.

In contrast, Renault, Nissan and Renault Samsung Motors share quite a bit (well, not on Leaf), just often things that weren't necessarily visible to the customer. Long ago, https://www.renaultsamsungm.com/new/main/main.jsp had many vehicles that clearly had Nissan engines (e.g. the VQ 3.5L V6). I haven't looked recently, but when I looked a few years ago, many of the interiors of cars resembled Renaults and not Nissans.

Long ago, when the 5th gen Maxima was the latest, the 4th gen was still being built in South Korea by Renault Samsung Motors and sold as their SM5 (https://web.archive.org/web/20120720054 ... e-to-savor).

Hyundai got to be an international automaker by building previous gen Mitsubishis as their own cars.

And Mitsubishi turned into a wreck of a company by rebadging Hyundai garbage as Mitsubishi. What a sad tale of a mismanaged company. It is the Japanese flavor of GM.

Nissan shows off a new CFRP production innovation
New method cuts the molding time from hours to just two minutes
https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/06/nis ... on-method/

I watched this below and it had some bits about early Nissan history that I didn't know. They didn't mention that once Ghosn saved the company that it was making record profits and had industry leading margins. I read https://www.titantalk.com/threads/nissa ... tar.21966/ when it was originally on detnews.com: "Nissan has eliminated its debt, and its operating margin last year was 10 percent -- the highest among full-line carmakers, exceeded only by Porsche."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7ooWr05wnw

Also, they asserted that the Ariya was Nissan's 1st new electric vehicle in a decade, which isn't quite right likely because CNBC and the above are rather US-centric. They missed at least the e-nV200 electric van and the Sylphy BEV (https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=26081).
