Wow, that is interesting. Progressive insured my 2011 Leaf with no problem or questions a month ago.
They may have taken my rant seriously then :)
The rate was basically the same as what the Prius was. The one potential question now is if the Snapshot device will work so I can get the 30% discount, like I have on the Prius.
What do you mean by that?
I think he's talking about http://www.progressive.com/auto/snapshot-how-it-works.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.progressive.com/auto/snapshot-common-questions.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that plugs into the OBD2 port. It may not work at all on the Leaf.

Haven't you ever seen Flo??? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flo_%28Progressive_Insurance%29" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But why wouldn't the OBDII port work the same on the Leaf as any other car, at least as far as standard things like speed?

Well, http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=126379#p126379" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; says there are 4 CAN buses on the Leaf. I'm not clear if "the standard things" are even presented on the bus(es?) that the Snapshot device looks at. IIRC, people have said that since the Leaf isn't an ICEV, it doesn't have to follow a lot of the same stuff that ICEVs do.

I haven't followed all the CAN stuff since I have no Leaf, but personally (for example), I'd prefer to buy another http://www.scangauge.com/products/scangaugeii/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to get the gid values than to spend more $ for Gary's SOC meter since the SG can do way more. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the SG can even retrieve those values right now.

The OP is correct. The LEAF uses a completely different bus system and the ScangaugeII for ICE cars will not work or register anything. The company is working on a LEAF gauge (had other priorities), but Ingineer is WAY ahead of them with his LEAFSCAN.

I don't have a full breakdown (declarations page) handy, but I pay $1,710 per year for two cars (2010 Honda Insight and 2011 Nissan LEAF), and 3 drivers (rated drivers are my 27 year old son and 53 year old wife).

This is through AAA (California State Auto Association)

coverage details:
Bodily Injury Coverage Code $500,000 per person/$500,000 per occurrence
Property Damage Coverage Code $100,000 per occurrence

Coverages for 2010 Honda:
Collision Coverage Code $1,000 deductible
Comprehensive Coverage Code $500 deductible
Under-Insured Coverage Code $100,000 per person/$300,000 per occurrence
Uninsured Coverage Code $100,000 per person/$300,000 per occurrence

Coverages for 2011 Nissan:
Collision Coverage Code $1,000 deductible
Comprehensive Coverage Code $500 deductible
Under-Insured Coverage Code $100,000 per person/$300,000 per occurrence
Uninsured Coverage Code $100,000 per person/$300,000 per occurrence

AAA gave me a guesstimate of $170/mo, or $100/mo more than I'm paying for my $5000 gas guzzler.

For the record, it's impossible to know if you are getting a good deal based on what other people are paying. Age, location, driving record, credit score, other potential drivers in your household, intended vehicle use, commuting distance, other vehicles or homes rolled into your policy, and much more are factored into your insurance rate.

My wife crashed our Sienna last year, so three cars are $150/month together now up from way less than $100 (100/300K coverage), so that's exactly what you'll be paying :)

We have owned our Leaf for two weeks. We traded my wife's ten year old Mustang GT convertible for our Leaf. We transferred the insurance from the Mustang to the Leaf and got a $351 rebate check from the insurance company. We paid $38000.00 for the Mustang when it was new and paid $38000.00 for the Leaf. Go figure. :D
