Update: They took the recorder out again, and also drove the leaf for one day. So far neither Nissan nor we were able to reproduce the problem and they apparently don't know what is going on.
Below two more pictures of that recorder box. There are are actually two boxes, one looks like some way to allow different ways to connect to the CAN bus, the other one is probably just a recorder for different types of buses, with a compact flash card (pm me if you want more details).
