Or maybe the real award will come at the end of 2013. In 2011 Nissan has severely limited production capacity so they'll sell everything they can build without giving any idea what the demand for Leaf really is. GM has even less capacity for Volt. Ford won't even be delivering yet, nor will Fiat, Saab, or anyone else.
By 2013 there could be enough worldwide capacity to build EVs that it should be clear what the demand is, and which EVs are preferred. Of course how much demand there is depends on the buildout of the charging infrastructure, and whether gasoline is closer to $3 or $6.
