Delayed Delivery

I picked up one of the first few Leafs in the Alexandria, VA area right before the start of the new year (Dec. 30 in fact, whew - thought I was going to lose out on the 2011 tax break and push it back a year). Anyway, I reserved it August 22nd and had a very steady 'week of Dec 3rd' delivery date up towards the end of November - and then the 'date creep' began.

I think I noted 5 different delays in December, but most infuriating was the dealers continued certainty that each new date was going to be the delivery day. One would think with their deep Nissan ties (deeper than mine), such over-promises could be avoided.

I know many of you haven't even ordered yet. I know that frustration. I ordered the same day they opened the remaining states on December 1. Has anyone had experience with how long the delivery could be delayed?

I had my charger installed this week. I'm ready here in Indiana!!

Just added week of February 16 to my long projected delivery list.

I spoke to LEAF folks today and they say mine is in the port area getting accessories put on. I only ordered the floor mats and cargo mat, so I'm not sure how long that could take to install. They said I should get the VIN/Carwings E-mail in about a week and that February 16 should be a good date. They said they're trying to hold that e-mail till the car leaves the port for the dealer.

I'm not sure what my phone conversation was all about. Obviously, they don't either.

We learned a year ago that a call to customer service was just a waste of time.
Plan to wait at least two weeks after the date before you have any real concern. ;)

Two weeks after which date? I have a long list of dates!

You should go back and read some of the stuff we wrote. Really quite a hoot. First we thought the time we reserved meant something then nothing, then it was the number we received when we ordered. Then it was this, then that. Every conversation with the Nissan "Help" line was reported on, often verbatim. When in reality, it was just hurry up and wait. Luckily, mine got out before the quake, from what I understand, just barely.

Just watch a youtube video or two of the Leaf in action and relax. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I was allowed to RAQ on Nov 30 here in PA and I immediately went to the dealer and turned it into an order. I ordered mats and splash guards. A week or so later my delivery went to Month of January, and about a week after that changed to Week of Feb 6 where it's remained ever since. The electrcian came to hook up the outlet for my charger (Leviton 160) on Dec. 17. I got my VIN Feb 1. Port (for me) is Elizabeth NJ (Newark/NYC), which is about 65 miles from my dealer. So if that truck started last Wednesday, it's moving at a snail's pace. I've driven past the port; it's right across from Newark Airport. I'm guessing they load the cars onto the truck and it's maybe a couple hours until it pulls up to my dealer. My dealer says he's fairly sure the car will be here sometime during the week of Feb 6. It'll be great to see it when it arrives!

Well, on Feb 5, my estimated delivery changed from week of Feb 6 to week of Feb 9, after having been steady at week of Feb 6 since mid-December. I'm not sure why it should shift around near the end. I would think the closer the car is to delivery, less variables would be left in the process, so it would become easier to get closer to the exact date. But maybe instead it is, the further the car gets from the Nissan factory, the less control they have over how long it sits in other people's parking lots... I am almost sure at this point that my car is sitting in one of the FAPS (Foreign Auto Preparation Service) parkings lot in Elizabeth NJ, waiting to be loaded on a truck for it's 65 mile trip to Peruzzi Nissan.

I'm kind of sorry it's Leap Year. It gives them an extra day to use!

Honestly, what kind of problem might cause this? I think they could, if someone actually looked into the problem, give you an explanation and a better estimate. However the impersonal nature of the Internet and customer support in general these days not only causes these silly things to happen, but for some reason people are encouraged to accept it as "normal and OK". In reality, this type of estimate is more useless than the guess-o-meter range indicator on the LEAF's dash. In addition, without a supporting explanation, it is an insult to the intelligence of the customer.

I asked the LEAF specialist at my dealer to track down my car. He gave me both its physical location and its VIN, when Nissan CS could not give either. He said the original delivery estimate of week of Feb 6 was realistic, when Nissan CS said it would probably slip. It will be interesting to see if he is right.

Does anyone know who generates these "Guess-o-delivery" dates? Do they really have any parameters beyond "I'm just screwing with you"?

Nissan CS told me a week ago the car was being loaded on a train in Long Beach, CA on the 26th of January, just before the est delivery debate changed from the 16th then to the 17th then to the 20th. When I called a week later he said he would "escalate it" and check with his supervisor. That was last Monday and since then I've heard nothing.

Argh.

I had something similar happen to me. Nissan knows it's in port and waiting for delivery, but you really don't know WHEN they load your car onto a delivery truck until they actually do. At that point, your (local) dealer/salesman can then get good tracking data from the delivery company/truck. Even at that point, my Leaf showed up a couple days EARLY because the delivery truck "jumped" his route (which was fine with me :) )

My experience was similar. The dealer salesman was able to find out when the car made it to a Portland lot. But from there it is up to the delivery company, which is an independent contractor. He said that in rare cases a car can be blocked in by later deliveries to the lot, which then have to be trucked out before the blocked car can be reached. As it happened, it took about five days for my car to be dropped at the dealer (then the next day the LEAF service guy was out sick so my delivery was slipped another day). Nevertheless, I got my car before the final Nissan estimated week.

My impression is that once the car leaves port, via train or truck, Nissan doesn't have a lot of control over the timing of the delivery to the dealer.

Now you can add yet another delay -- this time it's February 24. Seriously, did they lose my car or something? I could have walked to LA and driven the Leaf back using trickle charge for 900 miles in the time it will have taken them to ship it here. What really hurts is seeing posts from people on the east coast, mind you, who ordered in December and got delivery in January. :x

Come on Nissan, can you do better than this?

Ken

My delivery date changed 10 times before I finally got my car. Your experience with Nissan sounds all too familiar. I had endless delays during the months of Nov and Dec. You can check out my posts on the Florida thread. This forun is helpful for venting . Trust me, no one knows your exact delivery date until it shows up at the dealer. The good part is after a few weeks of owning the car all this crap becomes a distant memory.

Well, I guess it's starting for me.

Week of Feb 6
Week of Feb 9
Week of Feb 14

The LEAF specialist at the dealer emailed me yesterday and said he'd talked to Nissan and I would have my car by Feb 9.

What's up with all of this, anyway?

Edit: I just got the call (well an email, actuallly). The truck just pulled up to the dealer with my car! He says I can pick it up tonight. So, what's up with the Nissan web page. It seems to have a very tenuous connection to reality...

The original estimate of Week of Feb 6 turned out to be fine, so why did they bother changing it?

Be happy you aren't on the Tesla Model S reservation list. They put down $5K back in Early 2009 ($40K reservation for the Signature Series).
