The reported "Nissan EV" which caught fire while charging on the ferry between Norway and Denmark was NOT a Nissan EV, but a regular Nissan which somebody had converted themselves. Rather unsuccessfully, it would appear from the photos:

(A few seconds of advertising first.)

(The ferry company offers EVs "almost free", and lets you charge while you cross.)

They may rethink this policy after almost having their boat sink due to fire. Too bad the cheap conversions keep giving EV's a bad name.

Thanks for the link, Norway. I always enjoy hearing other languages spoken, so this was fun. I also now know that you have online gambling there, too, based on the ad at the beginning.

OT, but when I saw the opening still picture of the burned-out car, I couldn't help noticing the similarity to what I would imagine Jabba the Hut's skeleton would look like. [Sorry, was that out loud? Extreme nerdiness on display.]

I've only ever heard of one other EV catching fire in Norway. I can't remember the make or the battery type now. Nobody died, and it didn't make much headlines.

The reason today's fire made news both here in Norway and in Denmark is due to the Scandinavian Star disaster, when many people died in a fire on a similar ferry.

Has the cause been determined? I would not rule out a supply voltage issue.

The police are investigating.

It was apparently an unofficial conversion, so I'd start looking there. The 230V on ferries are usually stable, but of course something could be wrong there too.

Danish (in the clip) sounds "funny" to Norwegians (the languages are similar, but we jokingly says that it sounds as though the Danes are speaking with a potato in their throat! )

Here are the pages from the Norwegian EV society, and the webpage advertising free rides for EVs:
