Are Ca dealerships selling discounted cars at a loss?

Weston Nissan told me (when I was set for a 2011) that the car was selling for MSRP as they were only making $1300 and change over invoice.

I am still waiting for my 2012 to hit the dealership and have not sat down to discuss numbers (as they say they cannot sign paperwork till they have the car) and considering a 2012 is $3k more than the 2011 my dealer still verbally quoted MSRP, are the Ca dealers selling at a loss to move the 2011 or have we been mislead about invoice price?

You have to understand that car dealers don't really pay "Invoice" for their cars. The manufacturer gives them a lot of money back for various reasons but generally based on the cars sold. Therefore, you can consider that to be a discount off of invoice on each car.

It's quite a game

I can't speak to whether they're selling at a loss but I think they're lying given that there's dealer holdback on Nissans (http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/dealer-holdback/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I doubt it'd be any different for the Leaf.

I don't see any (real) incentives on the Leaf at http://www.cars.com/go/advice/incentives/incentivesAll.jsp?zc=95136#nissan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; nor http://local.nissanusa.com/san-francisco-oakland-san-jose-area/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. When there are big incentives on a car, dealers can sell for well below invoice and still make money. For examples, on the Altima Hybrid (even before it was killed for MY 2012), incentives in Nor Cal were typically $4K - $4.5K and at times as high as $5K.

And one Weston Nissan (South Florida) plays quite well (since I've dealt with them, too).

If you are well-informed and call their bluff, they are very quick and very happy to show you to the door.

Looks like 2011 SL with CWP same MSRP as 2012 SL. Is that right?
No - quite a bit of difference.

I've to say - these prices (even though are on 2011) are very good esp. if you are leasing, it wouldn't make any difference what year the car is - as long as it has the options (including cold weather package, if you want it) you need.
