A personal note.

My uncle is 95, and a month ago was fairly healthy. Would take the shuttle out to a supermarket and buy a steak and tell the kitchen how to cook it. Grew tomatoes outside his window at the home. Mentally he was all there, and he discovered how to use an computer and the internet a decade ago. Mostly to find pictures of naked ladies, which he very much enjoyed. But also movies, news and science and lots more. Covid got into the nursing home, he came down with a fairly mild case, and lost his sense of taste and smell, and has been increasingly confused. Has stopped eating, and no longer knows where he is, what happened a few minutes ago, or much of anything else. The home's staff and the family doesn't expect him to recover.

My Dad was 94 and fell and broke a hip (getting his snow tires out) just as Trump was elected in 2016, as a lifelong conservationist, teacher and scientist he absolutely hated the concept of what Trump would do to the natural world. Although he MIGHT have survived the broken hip, I think he just gave up on this poor world and the inability of the people who live here to see its value...... Died in his own house surrounded by everyone Jan 4 2017. RIP and glad he does not have to see all this ****.....

A FB friend of someone I know continually spews misinformation in FB comments about COVID and a TCF prohibited topic. I'm pretty sure it's the same person who has made a ton of anti-mask comments including posting https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/effectiveness-face-masks/ verbatim (asserting the post in there was true). Today, she said "Its a virus, LESS deadly than the flu!!" ARGH!

A relative who I thought was a reasonable person, now says she won't go to the hospital for anything because she doesn't want "some Doctor" claiming her death was from Covid, to get more money.
 
Gaslighting is a thing. It works.

Particularly when people are strongly motivated to want to believe. Easy peasy.

Sadly. Tragically in the case of the pandemic.

I keep hoping for a turnaround, for reason to eventually win out. It would seem that reality is likely to disappoint me.

If you can make people angry enough or fearful enough, the limbic system literally shuts down the pre-frontal cortex as part of the fight or flight response. It is literally true - at a biological level - that people become so scared or so angry that they can't think.

Gaslighters are skilled at taking advantage of this. Trump is a case in point. Professional gaslighter. And a skilled one at that.

I just hope that, along with all of the collateral victims, a majority of the country's truly stupid, selfish, thoughtless people are lost. Because humanity really needs to get smarter and to stop thinking with our dumbest genes.
