The truth is that gasoline is heavily subsidized in that the true costs to the environment are not borne by the consumers.
Not just that. There are several direct and indirect subsidies for oil companies.

Then there is the little matter of spening a Trillion dollars this decade alone to "secure" the oil.

FOX and the others would throw anyone to the lions or under a bus if it increased ratings
It is all bout selling advetising and nothing to do with any actual news facts

Likewise ethanol in the fuel is subsidized to reduce oil consumption
why not subsidize an EV to have the same effect

Because EV buyers don't help you get elected in Iowa caucus. Remove Iowa as the first caucus, ethonol subsidy would disappear.

Interestingly, McCain didn't even contest in Iowa because of his opposition to ethonol subsidies.

The question of why there should be a $7500 tax credit on the LEAF is a reasonable question

Indeed it is a reasonable question, one to which the answer has not been articulated. Is it stimulus? National security? Show me where in the enumerated powers it is the role of government to subsidize the purchase of a consumer product at the expense of other taxpayers, or health care services, or any of the other craziness going on.

At one end of the spectrum you have folks that believe free markets should be the sole allocator of resources, at the other end you have the central planner fans. You'll never settle the arguments.

The subsidy of EVs is no different than home interest deduction

I am fine with removing ALL personal dedutions and adjust the rate accordingly.

And business can pay tax on GAAP reported income. (no more separate books kept for tax) Show profit for bonus and high stock price and you pay the tax or report low to avoid tax and let the stock tank. No special interests or deductions.

That is my method to save the country even if it has a million holes in it.

Federal govt can tax & spend any way they want. That is the core of the constitution. The whole idea of a legislature is to make new rules around this taxing & spending bit.

You mean Obama's EV subsidy? Oh, no, sorry, that was Bush. http://www.hybridcars.com/incentives-laws/congress-throws-cash-plug-hybrids-25093.html. Or maybe you mean Bush's $100,000 tax credit for huge SUV's? http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Hybrid/story?id=97505&tqkw=&tqshow=&page=1 Or is this one of those subjects where liberals love any subsidy of products they think liberals will buy, conservatives love any subsidy of products they think conservatives will buy, and only the fringes - Libertarian and Greens - manage to maintain a consistent position?

Leaf would be pretty hard to classify as a liberal or conservative product. Are people buying it to save the planet from global warming? To save the country from oil dependence? To save American jobs from industrial collapse? To save themselves money when gas prices spike again? Because it's a cool new gadget? Maybe all those reasons?

I find it interesting that Fox sorta breezed across the $7500 tax credit for the Volt. If this credit was not available to every American Taxpayer (Leasing allows this) then I could see the gripe. In contrast, Bush's $100,000 tax credit to by an H1 Hummer only worked for wealthy business owners looking to dodge their Tax liability... and get a free $100,000 car to boot. I don't know to many regular hard working Americans that got to claim that credit. This EV credit is for everyone if they want it.

If I buy a Leaf or other qualifying vehicle and claim the $7,500 credit, the "taxpayer" is not giving me $7,500. I am simply keeping my own money.

Isn't that the argument they use for tax cuts - "You get to keep your own money" ? Or are you going to admit that tax cuts are, in fact, made at the expense of the taxpayers? The same argument against tax credit subsidies applies to tax cuts in general, though at least subsidies are more effective in their purpose due to targeting specific usages.

Touche'

With all the redistribution going on, you'd be a fool not to spend as much time at the trough as possible. That doesn't make it right though.

If that was really true any unused credit would roll forward, yes?

Despite what FUD is spread through the airwaves, the amount of "redistribution" happening today is the lowest since (at least) the '20s -- and it's the lowest of any industrialized country.

When Fox (and other conservative) commentators scream about the "socialist redistribution of wealth" taking place in our country being "class warfare," it always seems to be in objection to some measure that will take money from the rich somehow and give it to the poor. Ignoring the fact that many of them also espouse that Christian ideals should be applied to other social issues (and caring for the poor is certainly an ideal that Jesus championed), how do they square this supposed "class warfare" against the economic facts that show an ever-increasing concentration of wealth over the last decade into the hands of the few, and the rapidly increasing disparity between the wages of the average worker vs. the salaries and bonuses of the executive class? There is no doubt who is "winning" the class warfare in this country. All you have to do is "follow the money." The type of "free-market capitalism" and lack of government intervention they desire will not cure this trend, IMHO, only exacerbate it.

Absolutely. How else would the banks with 0% financing get wealthy - if not by getting the money redistributed to them from everyone else ?

The $7500 Fed tax credit does NOT carry over if not fully used.

That is why they have a Lease option that uses the full $7500. Available to everyone if they want it.
