How does your LEAF handle minor road flooding?

I am sitting on the fence about leasing a SL and am wondering how it would've fared on my normal 30 mile commute home today.

We are in a weather cycle were we receive severe afternoon thunderstorms and today was biblical. Flooding up to the floor boards on the city streets and couple of places on the interstate. My normal 30 minute commute turn into a 60 minute ordeal.

What do you folks think?

Nissan has definitely tested that : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmNHSxWMl7E" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Although I'm not sure what that much drag would do to your range.

There is also a cool "lightening" test on YouTube but I can't find it.

Here's a UK Leafer who went across a flooded roadway in his:

Here's an EV that didn't fare so well.

I know! Let's make big passages for blowing air through the pack! ;)

The same video has the water flood test at its beginning I just pegged it for the lightening test.

Hers. Nikki (Transport Evolved host) probably should have chickened out...but it was still way cool.

That's a woman talking?

Sounds like a woman to me. It's just a noisy video with just a few brief utterances. I've been listening to Nikki's podcasts for some time and the only thing that took getting used to for my American ears was the accent and British-isms. But now I can hear Aluminium without skipping a beat. :)

Any decent EV is going to be able to handle at least as much road flooding as a comparably sized ICE car. The LEAF's battery pack seems to be sealed well enough. I drove my LEAF through a stream crossing last year, on a dirt road (and unfortunately didn't take a video).

so very off topic but I went to listen to the most recent show, they were talking about tesla's battery swap and she mentioned her wife.

http://about.me/aminorjourney" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; = woman you heard on the video
http://about.me/Kathryn_gordon-bloomfield" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; = her wife

anyway, I'm back to listening to the discussion as it is a good, interesting one.

I am wondering how well sealed Tesla Model S battery packs that have been "exchanged" a few times will be from high water...

The first week I owned my Leaf there was a flash flood by one of my client's building. The closer I got to their building the higher the water got, I chickened out at around 12" where I saw the first dead car. There were 5 or 6 other dead cars down the street but that water was at like 3 feet.

I took a back road to their building and the water there was only 8", I went through it fine. No water got inside.

I've been to the UK several times so I'm used to hearing British accents. I've listened to it again and now I can pick up where the voice sounds like that of a woman, but I can also see where someone can mistake it for a man's.

Just discovered this thread...

Yes, I'm a girl. And yes, I'm gay. And yes, I have a wife ;)

(That's why we live in the UK, although -- to take it even further off topic -- SCOTUS this week could change that in a few years' time)

That video was taken last winter, when we had torrential rain for an extended period of time. You're right: I could have avoided the flood, but as it was fairly fresh (rather than sea water) I decided it was okay. I'd chickened out a couple of days earlier in the Prius...

Nikki.

P.S. In case anyone is interested, when it's not raining here in Bristol, England, we put on cool things like this: http://www.leaftalk.co.uk/showthread.php/11585-Electric-Sunday-Greenweek-Bristol-23rd-June-whos-going" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is the Leaf battery hermetically sealed?

I know you cant drive an ICE if water gets above a certain height -- but does the same apply to the Leaf or could you actually drive through deeper water than with an ICE sedan (non-SUV)?

Since an ICE requires oxygen and a Leaf type car doesn't it is conceptually possible to drive completely submerged, except for perhaps the oxygen starved passengers. :p

Yes, the battery is sealed with a slight positive pressure.
