What are your coverages and deductibles?
I found Safeco (Liberty Mutual) to be the least expensive.

There are too many variables in quoted insurance costs to make any real judgement regarding your personal situation, including your age, location, usage, driving record, coverage limits, discounts, etc. Look at some of the previous threads on the forum regarding insurance--individual experiences vary widely. In general, the Leaf is indeed an expensive car to insure, as repair costs for it are high. As useless as it may be for direct comparison, I have Allstate myself and pay $427 every 6 months to insure our Leaf. My 2001 F250 PSD truck is $231 for the same period and coverage limits, so not quite double, but almost, and my truck is 9 years older than yours.

YMMV,

comprehensive 200
collision 250
30 rental
2500 pip
no towing
100k/300k and 50k property per lease requirements

State Farm said mine went up to 628 from 570 because my defensive driving certificate expired and Leaf was now in a higher theft risk category to which I questioned as b.s. No tickets or accidents in the last 5 years as of 12/16 when I switch to Geico.

Hope this helps someone,

Ian B

+1 ... I happen to also have Allstate (say that with a baritone voice --- sorry, latest Allstate commercial), live outside Chicago, and my '12 LEAF SL was within $10 every 6 months of the car it replaced which was an '06 Mazda3 GT hatch ... we also added new car replacement but was only like $5 more. Sounds like it may be time to compare with other insurers (Allstate may meet or beat other rates when confronted with losing a customer)

Geico was the cheapest around for me, plus I got to use a military discount with them so it made it even better.

AAA was screwing me over.

AAA was my best price , so I guess your experience may vary on the insurance rep you get.

I have USAA. They raised our rates this time. The bill said it was because of the changed mileage for our ICE (a 2006 Acura TSX). That made no sense, since my wife, who is the main driver of the Acura, almost always uses the Leaf now. The Acura only gets 3000 mi. a year, compared to ~6000 mi. before. The mileage drops by 50% and rates go up? So my wife called and they changed their story. They said we were previously getting a discount for having a car, the Leaf, with a built-in system for tracking, like Lojack, but after talking to me for the rate update they found out it doesn't have a Lojack-like system. Can anyone help out here? Do we know for sure whether Nissan can and will (or won't) track the car through its GPS system if it's stolen? The increase was so minimal it's not worth worrying about, maybe $2.50 every 6 mos. or so, but I'm curious.

I think we came to the conclusion that Nissan can't or won't help locate the car. You can always call customer service and ask.

I am having a bit of a hard time believing this. Has any Leaf ever been stolen? If so, did Nissan refuse to help locate it? It might help us in our discussion of insurance if we could determine whether in fact the Leaf is theft-prone or not, and if it is prone to theft whether it is generally or always recovered (as one might expect).

I have Travelers. Leaf insurance was the same or a little less than the 2005 Subaru Outback Sport it replaced.

We have USAA and our insurance for the 2012 LEAF/15k lease went up $23/month after we sold/replaced the 2001 Nissan Altima with it, I actually didn't think that was too bad.

Bingo. They also gave me a good rate for kids (I have a teenage driver).

I am paying about $1250 per year to Farmers for a leased Leaf and an owned old Escort wagon. This is up from about $500 or $600 per year (I don't remember exactly for the Escort, since most of the time I just had liability on it which I think got down to $400-$500 per year?). I called Farmer's today to ask if they still had some sort of thing that I remembered where you could estimate mileage on a vehicle because I figured they might be over-estimating. In fact they said they used to have something where you could designate a "primary" car, but they don't have this any more.

Does anyone have an experience with their insurance company where there is some accounting for the fact that basically the same mileage is being split between two vehicles? I'm sure it's different for other households than mine (one driver only), but I'm just wondering.
