Mitsubishi reports 2 battery problems, no recalls

They are now saying that EV production is being halted until they can get to the bottom of the issue.

So I'm guessing no Outlander PHEV for us this coming winter after all.

This car was an exciting prospect, but the battery overheating problem, recalling its first 4.000 units, and the company still standing on shaky ground means I could never be an early adopter the way I was with the Leaf. They really bungled this release. By the time they get this to market, other companies who have their stuff together will beat them to it with other SUV and 4WD PHEVs. I guess we all just have to be patient, or go with one of the existing ones in the meantime (vote on them here):

Auto companies are notorious for covering up flubs (or we could just call it lying to save their market share), so when I hear about one, I assume there are five other problems that have yet to be disclosed.

Motorweek has a review of the ICE version of the Outlander on this week's show. If you're interested in the Outlander PHEV for next year and you can get Motorweek on TV, you might be interested in watching.

They liked the interior layout, the spunky four cylinder and the pricing. They weren't so happy with the exterior styling or the 0-60 time of the four cylinder.

One problem they may have: Upon seeing the pictures of it, my wife said, "Why did they have to make it so ugly?"

One of those redesigns that flops in terms of styling. Instead making it with more curved lines like most of the CUVs these days, they made it boxy like the 90s.

Delayed now until 2015. Supposedly because strong European and Japanese sales are swallowing up all current production. Which sort of falls in line with what I heard off-the-record from my Mitsubishi insider in February:

"The reason for this vehicle being introduced in 2015 rather than in 2014 is because we have received overwhelming demand from Japan and Europe and the battery supply unfortunately cannot keep up with the demand", said Mitsubishi communications representative Amanda Savercool this week.

It might be just as well. I had occasion to drive a 2014 ICE version and came away completely unimpressed with every aspect of it. Unless the BEV version is much better, I would not consider it.

batterey failures / recall will likely make even greater delays. Still - I'm all over it. Wonder if Chademo will be an option.

And GCR is reporting someone else at Mitsubishi saying the fall of 2014 (maybe?). Sounds like they need to get their messaging straight internally before they send spokes-holes into the world!

Glad we didn't put off buying our Volt in anticipation of getting one of these at the end of this year. That was the plan before fate pushed us.

Hmmmm .... we would probably be better off with a 2 year lease on some ICE and wait for a (actually any) plugin SUV/CUV.

Given that plugin SUV would be the most logical PHEV, very surprisingly why there are none around.

It's not 'till 2015 not:

Not exactly a glowing review of the ICE version of the 2014 Outlander in the latest edition of Consumer Reports. :( I think they gave it a 58 overall score.

Big Deal ... they hate the Leaf & the Prius. They know what side of the bread that the butter is on for them. It ain't fuel efficient vehicles of any kind - unless it's the Tesla.

Outlander PHEV Now On Sale In Europe

Many PHEVs are arriving in Europe.

So we get screwed because demand is too high in Japan AND Europe? likely excuse. lets face it; the political climate in Europe AND the lack of governmental support in the US is the reason we have to wait...

Considering that they do not take advertising of any kind, I fail to see the relevancy... Plus, there are a number of fuel-efficient vehicles that they have liked... So, I have to call foul on this comment.
