I can credit my Dad with giving utility and tax rates consideration when vetting out where to live. He drilled that into us that very early on.

Sigh... I just checked https://www.pge.com/tariffs/tm2/pdf/ELEC_SCHEDS_E-1.pdf again and now our new tier 3 (every kWh beyond 606 kWh in a 30 day month) is 40.307 cents/kWh!

Ouch! Sorry to hear man, hopefully the pay is commiserate with the cost of living!

Fortunately, I'm on E-6 and rarely go into tier 2 because of a small household and free EV charging at work. And, I work at a place that pays VERY well, in absolute dollars and vs. other companies.

The electricity bill is actually small compared to other costs here. And, unfortunately, there's a vicious cycle here of having to pay people high so that they can "afford" to live here... but that means housing prices are high and so on. Take a look at these:

http://www.businessinsider.com/san-jose-median-home-price-1-million-2016-8 which points to http://www.realtor.org/news-releases/2016/08/home-price-gains-unfettered-in-most-metro-areas-during-second-quarter
http://www.corelogic.com/solutions/configurable-real-estate-data-reports.aspx - second free chart on the right, search for Santa Clara County

A down payment on a house here is like the entire cost of a house in much of the rest of the country. Put in major cities like San Jose, CA into https://www.redfin.com/ or https://www.trulia.com/ to see what I mean.

One of several reasons I high-tailed it out of California. The job offer I was given in Sunnyvale paid half again what I was offered in Syracuse. But the cost of living is so much higher that my quality of life is better here. For example, I paid $130k for my 4-bedroom house on 1/3 acre of land. That probably isn't even enough for a down payment in your area!

The main reason I left CA, though, is the climate. I can't stand the bland day-in/day-out same old, same old weather. It drove me nuts. I'm a four-seasons kinda guy. I know I'm an outlier, but I moved by to NY for the snow :)
