European Conservatives are usually the rough equivalent of so-called Centrist Democrats in the US. The European equivalents of US Republicans are usually racist, nativist and authoritarian.

A friend came over last night to borrow money. I'd left my phone upstairs, so I had no warning when the doorbell rang. I didn't let her in, but I was exposed to the air around her, briefly, when I lifted a bag through the door onto the porch. The Exposure Clock resets yet again...
Once upon a time, US Republicans actually stood for strong national defense, a balanced budget, democratic ideals and traditions, freedom of the press, and even family values. Not that they uniformly acted on these notions, but they at least made an effort some fraction of the time. I didn't support all of their specific policies by a long shot, but I could at least respect their principles.

I'm not sure that our political leanings are entirely off-topic. We don't need name-calling, but conversing with people of differing backgrounds in a constructive way can be helpful. I am now, BTW, a vegetarian Socialist a bit to the Left of Bernie Sanders. Converts do, after all, make the best fanatics. ;)

File under amusement.

I've supported Republican candidates in the past, and as a result get fund raising snail mails.
I used to be a Thatcherite Conservative, so when I came to the States I obviously became a Reagan Republican. Then, over the course of that 8 years, I realized how badly Reagan screwed ordinary people over. I haven't voted R since.
+1 and its funny how the EXACT same tactics were used. Reagan started the equal pay for the military and that suckered me in. I was in my early 20's and naive but didn't take long to realize he wasn't helping me. trump is flipping us that TEMPORARY tax cut that I barely benefited from along with a $1200 COVID incentive with MAJOR financial rewards for big money attached to both.

Its all rather tragically funny. I like Carter as a person but thought he was too much of a country bumpkin to lead the country. I couldn't have been more wrong. He was simply elected 20 years too soon.

Thatcher sucked us in by promising to be tough on the unions and to fix the economy. As a people, the British had suffered through blackouts and cold homes due to widespread strike action in the winter of 1979, which left a bunch of ordinary people mad at a whole bunch of other ordinary people. I realize that now I have 40 years more wisdom.

My Google Home/Nest Hub when playing the news played back a summary of this story. Crazy!
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2 ... -covid-19/
A funeral and a birthday party: CDC traces Chicago coronavirus outbreak to two family gatherings
Case study shows how a single person can set off a chain reaction of infections
...
In February, family members gathered for a Chicago-area funeral. A family friend who had been out of state attended and was just a bit sick with mild respiratory symptoms.

Before long, 16 people between the ages of 5 and 86 had been infected with the novel coronavirus (seven confirmed and nine probable), and three had died.

The case study, published Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is one of the most detailed looks at how covid-19 moves through communities and shows how a single person can set off a chain reaction of infections. The transmissions — traced to a funeral and birthday party held three days apart — took place before major social distancing policies were implemented and may have facilitated transmission of covid-19 to the broader Chicago community.

The novel coronavirus is stealthy.

To keep covid-19 under control without shutting down most of the economy, both testing and case tracking need to be top-notch. See South Korea, which lost control (case 31) and has regained it. See Singapore, which had good control until recently and had to shutdown due to outbreak in crowded worker dorms.

The US testing is improving. What is the US plan for case tracking? Testing alone will not isolate the likely infected or exposed. Need to have a robust and fast way of telling people the person they ate lunch with yesterday just tested positive... before they go to someone's birthday party tonight.

I'm hearing mostly crickets.

I can't wait to see what Covid-19 does to our 1 trillion dollar deficit. I'm predicting 2+ trillion dollar deficit.
The general rule is you spend money during bad times, but during good you should have more or less a balanced budget.
Some even feel you can "grow" out of debt by increasing GDP during good times, hence lowering your overall % debt against GDP.
But we just finished up one of the best periods in my life of economic growth and yet WERE running a 1 T dollar deficit.

Speaking of which, I don't think the GOP has abandoned balanced budget. It will come roaring back as soon as the GOP does not hold the white house.
