Carmakers say they 'can't meet' Euro 6 emissions targets
Also, VW's Diesel Scandal Is Apparently An American Conspiracy
http://www.autoblog.com/2015/10/04/diesel-emission-standards-europe/

. . . Far and away the most astonishing thing here though, is the way the ACEA is viewing the VW diesel scandal. According to AE, the EU insider said automakers across the pond think there's "a US conspiracy against European diesels." Yep. Volkswagen installed software on millions of vehicles to cheat emissions tests and it's somehow an American conspiracy. That makes loads of sense.

Just put a NEW 2016 CARB compliant Diesel engine in my 2011 Audi A3 TDI, and I will go away quietly :D

All wishful thinking aside, this is not going to be resolved with a quick ROM re-flash :x

What if the States come back with "this thing will not meet the current emission standards, and we will therefor not be renewing your registration until it does so"............................

An object attached to another object by an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis.

That would be correct!

Old news, poorly reported.

Does Renault-Nissan’s dual-CEO Carlos Ghosn blame America for using #dieselgate as a pretext for an attack on the EU car industry? Ghosn wrote a letter to EU trade ministers, the letter made it into the London Times (paywall), where it triggered the headline “US accused of raid on ‘superior’ European diesels to save its own.” The Dailykanban has the backstory.

...the anti-American letter was never sent.

Here is what really happened...

A draft was written and circulated among the many members of ACEA. Then, someone leaked the draft. The actual letter sent to Brussels by Carlos Ghosn on behalf of ACEA and all EU auto manufacturers did not contain the language about Detroit trying to make hay out of dieselgate, as true as it may be. The real letter is here.

But it is an option, i.e. since the vehicle passes EPA standards when the vehicle's engine ECU
operates with the compliant emissions firmware. All it would take is a simple firmware 'patch'
downloaded via the OBDII port, taking at most 15 minutes per vehicle. So VW could decide that
this is a temporary solution or just accept the possible loss of vehicle responsiveness and/or
a loss of fuel economy and consider that as the final 'fix'. Obviously, this has potential for consumer
class action remedies, but a long consumer legal battle might be less costly for VW with the EPA
happy with VW now compliant. The 'fix' assumes that vehicles operating long term in the compliant
EPA mode have no long term reliability problems.

Were other cars subject to this same test that was seemingly randomly carried out by some university or have I the wrong end of the stick ?

As I read it, that article says that the vehicles polluted a lot more in the Real Driving Conditions tests that are under development to replace NEDC, not that they cheated on the existing NEDC (or EPA) dynamometer tests (which is what VW did). A big difference.

Yep, a big difference indeed! And we may, in fact, find out that the same is true of gasoline engines as well

I'm not so sure ...

Volkswagen is in some deep stuff right now. So deep, in fact, that they just deleted diesels from their website...

If you open up VW’s website, you’ll find nary a mention of diesels and you won’t find most their questionable TDIs on their car configurator (the Touareg TDI is the only one left)—crazy considering how just a month ago VW was touting their diesels as the second coming...

Volkswagen’s diesels will come back at some point, so why delete them from the website?...

Easiest way to fix something on the web - esp. when things are very fluid - is to remove them. Looks like that is what they have done.

How the VW diesels perform in cheat mode
http://www.autoblog.com/2015/10/09/vw-diesels-cheat-mode-consumer-reports-test/

. . . how will the affected cars perform when they're in their emissions-cheating test mode? Consumer Reports was able to find out, tapping into what it believes is the cheat mode. . . .

With that done, CR hit the road, testing both a 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI and a 2015 Jetta TDI sedan in their normal and cheat modes. . . . the 2011 uses the EA188 diesel, which represents the bulk of the affected cars, while the newer Jetta uses the latest EA288, which just arrived for model year 2015. . . .
Summarizing their results:

The EA188 engine 0-60 time increased by 0.6 seconds while in emissions-compliant cheat mode; fuel economy dropped from 50 to 46 mpg. For the EA288 the 0-60 increase was only 0.1 second – mpg dropped from 53 to 50 mpg.

Running in cheat mode decreased both performance and fuel economy. However, even in emissions-compliant cheat mode, both vehicles beat their EPA mpg estimates. Per FuelEconomy.gov, the manual-transmission 2011 TDI Sportwagen, the model with the highest mpg, was rated at 30 mpg city/42 mpg highway/34 combined (auto transmission drops the city/combined ratings by one mpg; the highway drops by three). A manual 2015 Jetta TDI sedan is EPA rated at 31 city/46 highway/36 combined (the auto drops 1 mpg, HWY only).

E.U car makers are heavily fighting the Euro 6 regulations before they come into effect in 2020.
And as before they'll probably succeed. Maybe Dieselgate will make E.U regulators think twice ?

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-ne...-car-makers-cant-meet-euro6-emissions-targets

I honestly hope Dieselgate brings the end to Diesel in the E.U. With over 500 million people who's to know the true level effect on human health or health costs with so many people subjected to filthy diesel exhaust ?

Diesel was an unnecessary mistake caused by extortionate taxes on fuel.
