Both of mine went out at around the same time and that makes sense. The key is basically a little radio transmitter that is constantly transmitting at a low power. It has to constantly transmit since you can get in the car without touching any buttons to indicate that it should transmit. I'm sure it transmits at a much higher power when you press the buttons (since it works from farther away), so you could burn out a primary one faster than a spare one if you use the buttons on the key a lot.
