Savings $448 in fuel costs per month

Edit: I see folks are posting lifetime savings, so I have 11.5 months and 22,000 miles, so 11.5 * $448 = $5,152 total savings

I replaced a 16mpg minivan (with 140,000 miles).

At $4 gal (we're inching toward $5 in San Diego), and the 2000 miles that I drive per month, the math is:

2000 / 16 = 125 gallons * $4 = $500

The LEAF on it's dedicated meter at 7.7 cents from midnight to 5am, and 3miles/kWh from the wall, is:

2000 / 3 = 666.67 kWh * $.077 = $51.33

Note: that minivan was a maintenance PIG; add up all those oil changes, brakes every 30,000 miles max, flushing all the fluids (trans at $100 a pop), air filters, all the leaking seals in the engine, drive half shafts, both door window regulators, several 12 volt batteries (which the LEAF will do also), and lots and lots of little things that add up. One thing better on the minivan was the tires. They are really bad on the LEAF, and mine will need replacement soon.

Let's see... about 3,700 miles over the past four months. FPL said I used 1,087 kWh at 11.5 cents/kWh, or about $125.

If I still had my Prius, it would have been 74 gal (50 mpg) at $3.90/gal, or about $290.

Not a huge difference, but I much prefer using cheap (and getting cheaper all the time), domestic natural gas and nuclear power than gasoline derived from imported oil.

SAvings over 4 months. - 6000 miles

$290 total electric bills
(120) assume non ev charges
-------
$170 ev usage

$800 gas usage Saab 95 premium gas

$630 savings over 4 months

A table of my electricity bill for the past 6 months. Only the last bill in that list corresponds to Leaf getting charged everyday of that cycle. As I said I got my Leaf exactly on the day when my billing cycle starts which makes this a great way to compare my consumption.

I'm not sure I follow how you are "comparing" your electricity bill.

If you are just comparing to previous months where you did not have your LEAF (ie, no charging events), this is a terrible and inaccurate method. Just the fluctuation in your household usage and HVAC usage with the season changes is enough to mask your LEAF's electricity usage. I'd suggest installing a metering device (CT, TED, etc) if you plan on keeping track of your LEAF's electricity usage from the wall.

Again I want to stress that it is an inaccurate method of showing your LEAF's electricity usage.

Edit- if you want a more accurate way to estimate your LEAF's usage without installing a CT or metering device, see this post:

My point is just that. My Leaf consumption is no more than noise level due to fluctuations due to normal usage. And you are right that I am only unscientifically guesstimating how much I would have spent.

If I were to calculate it differently :

1200 miles at 4.5 miles/kWh average (from Carwings console) = 266kWh. With 85% efficiency from the Wall, that would be = 313kWh = $31. That is $5 more than my original calculation.

No big difference that I need to be concerned about.

Four months:
2273 miles, 676 kWh x 13.0228¢/kWh = $88.03

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee generally gets about 23 mpg and the average price of gas over the last four months has been ~$3.70/gallon (currently it is $3.82/gallon) so:
(2273/23) x $3.70 = $365.66

Gas savings: $365 - $88 = ~$277

I don't drive enough for the LEAF to ever be cost-effective by any reasonable measure, especially considering the battery replacement cost to come. But I bought it to drastically reduce my use of oil to get around and it works fine for that. Besides, it is way more fun to drive than any ICE car I've ever owned!

9 months , 22000km (13750 miles), 4058kW.h, 380€ (500USD at today's rate). In the car the LEAF replaced I made 6l Diesel /100km, so for 1.45€/l Diesel in Portugal I am saving 22000x6/100x1.45 - 380€ = 1534€ (around 2000 USD). I will save around 2000€/year (2600USD/year) in fuel alone.

Ya these things will never pay off.
I drive on average 150 km per day. My Subaru would use $600 worth of gas per month. I have put 3500km on my Leaf the first 4 weeks. It costs me $1.80 per day to charge my Leaf. Even if I drove 150km 30 days a month it would only cost me $54.00 per month.
Ya these things will never pay off.

For me, even though I have added around 300khw a month my electric bill went down. Seems crazy but with the SCE TOU-EV single meter, by moving my pool filtration time to 12:00am my bill went down 20.00 a month. I trickle charge at work for free so my cost per month is -$20.00 to drive 1800 miles per month. I replaced a Avalanche that got around 15 mpg average city/hwy so I'm saving another $514.00 a month not counting regular maintenance ($6,400.00 a year) 2 years and I can afford to by a new battery :D
