Yes, we have been hearing about Chevy Bolt with 60kWh battery at $30K price, after the rebates. Chevy claims that the car should be available by 2016.

Is it really happening now? If 60kWh battery is possible at such lower price, how can Tesla justify the current their prices of Model S/X (of course, they're advertising Model 3)? Also, what about Leaf, e-Golf, i3?

I know that all of them are gambling with half-priced lithium batteries in 1-2 years. But I don' t know how I should read this Chevy Bolt.

Yes, it appears to be real, but not "now", but rather a few (maybe even hundreds) will be delivered this Fall to that great land called California. Eventually, they will trickle out to the rest of the US. Probably fewer than 10,000 will be sold in 2017, most in CA and other CARB states. Maybe a few thousand will be available for the rest of the US. I wouldn't expect mass deliveries until late 2017-2018 (e.g., 2000+ per month). The Tesla model 3 ($35-40K) will follow soon thereafter (maybe a few months to a year behind), but will probably deliver larger numbers. As for how can Tesla justify the S/X higher prices, well, how can a Ford F350 start at $62K? Simple, people buy them.

Industry forecasters are predicting Bolt sales around 22,000/year, about the same as the Volt.
